The State of Small Businesses in the LDCs:
Taking the Pulse of SMEs in the LDC Markets During COVID-19

September 9th, 8:00AM-9:15AM EST

The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to impact least developed countries with particular ferocity. The small-and-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in these markets—which are irreplaceable actors when it comes to net new job creation, financial inclusion, and innovation in practically every sector—are specifically susceptible to the profound economic consequences of COVID-19. While there are public and private sector actors interested in supporting SMEs in LDC markets during this time, there is a tremendous information gap in terms of understanding precisely what these small businesses need to navigate this historic crisis.

Providing an expansive, incisive and instrumental survey that could serve as both commercial and policy intelligence to fill this information gap was the motivation of our consortium.

The result is “The State of Small Businesses in the LDCs: Taking the Pulse of SMEs in the LDC Markets During COVID-19”—a survey of over 2,300 SMEs, spanning over 20 sectors, representing all 47 LDCs.  Our comprehensive survey has produced a wealth of data that will provide clear, actionable visibility of SME needs across the LDCs in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to presenting preliminary results during the technical presentation and exchange, invitees will be able to participate in a conversation about the findings and how SMEs can be supported during this time. We have also invited several SME business leaders operating in LDCs, who responded to the survey, to share their experiences and insights on how they are navigating their operations through the COVID-19 pandemic.

This webinar will precede a policy discussion session that will take place at this year's Concordia Annual Summit on September 25th. The consortium will also conduct presentations in several LDCs using country-specific data from the survey. The goal of these country-focused presentations is to leverage the survey data to convene and build partnerships that can support small businesses in their countries during this time.
